The other day, I noticed some gnats in the nesting boxes, so I asked around for any natural remedies. My friend, Angela, said to dilute pure vanilla. So I grabbed an empty spray bottle and added the pure vanilla and filled the bottle up with water. I also noticed quite a bit of flies hanging out in there as well, so I also made some homemade fly repellent. 2 cups of white vinegar and 2 Tablespoons of dish soap. I use Mrs. Meyer's Dish Soap.
First, I sprayed the nesting boxes inside and out with the diluted vanilla. I then grabbed the bottle of fly repellent and sprayed the rest of the coop down. I didn't soak everything, just a nice mist spritzed everywhere. We also do the deep litter method in our coop, so I turned the current bedding with a shovel and then added a fresh layer of bedding.
After I was done spraying and doing the bedding, I added my Herbal Nesting Box Mix to the nesting boxes and coop floor. This herbal mix is made to help repel lice, mites, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, and rodents. It also helps your flocks immune system, respiratory system and digestion, plus it makes the nesting boxes smell good!
The whole coop smelled and looked good when I was done. My girls thought so too, because when I opened the door, they came in and rolled around in the bedding. Happy chickens makes for a happy chicken mama!
